This black and white wash drawing was originally reproduced in Drawings by Frederic Remington, published in 1897. It was exhibited the same year in Boston under the title, The Buffalo Hunt—Her Calf. The subject seems to depict a buffalo cow shielding her calf from an attack by two mounted warriors. The work was popular enough to have been reproduced in the same period on a china serving platter made by the Buffalo Pottery Company, located in Buffalo, New York.
