Self-Guided Tours for Students and Adults
We are committed to creating the best possible experiences for all visitors. Please note that the museum cannot accommodate more than thirty students on self-guided tours at any one time.
Self-guided groups must reserve gallery time to prevent overcrowding in the galleries. Educators who wish to lead students through the museum may schedule their group with the programs manager at 817.989.5031 three weeks in advance of the date requested. Self-guided tours are free for students and chaperones.
Scheduling
Have the following information ready when you call:
- School name
- Grade level or age of the group
- Number of people in the group and number of adult chaperones
- Preferred date and time with three alternate dates and times in case your first choice is not available
- Name, mailing address, e-mail address, and phone number of contact person
A confirmation letter will be mailed to you after you book your self-guided tour. A week before your tour, please call 817.989.5031 to confirm the date, time, and number in your group.
Chaperones
Please arrange for one adult chaperone (preferably a teacher) to accompany every ten students. Chaperones must remain with their groups at all times and are responsible for student supervision in the museum. Be sure all chaperones are familiar with the museum’s rules, which are enclosed with the tour confirmation letter.
Student Tour Preparation
Preparing your students to visit the museum can make a significant difference in the quality of their experience. One of the best ways to prepare students is to borrow free resources from the museum’s Teaching Resource Center (TRC) a few weeks before your tour.
Arriving at the Museum
- Enter the museum through the Lancaster Avenue entrance. Leave backpacks, umbrellas, bags, or other large items on the bus; we provide bins for coats at the entrance. If students must bring these items into the museum, they will need to check them along with their coats.
- A Gallery Attendant will greet you when you enter the building and review the museum’s guidelines for self-guided groups with you and your students. Please prepare your students for this experience by reviewing with them the guidelines.
In the Museum’s Galleries
- Scavenger hunts or other search-and-find activities are not allowed in the museum. Please discuss alternative learning activities with the programs manager when you schedule your tour.
