Not Just for February: Integrating African-American History, Culture, and Arts into Your Curriculum
Educator Institute
$50, The institute runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Discover how to integrate African-American history and culture and the contributions of African-Americans into school curriculum throughout the year. Using artworks from the exhibition The Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection of African-American Art: Works on Paper and the museum’s permanent collection, participants will understand that American art, history, literature, and music cannot be fully comprehended without including the contributions of all groups, including African-Americans. Topics featured during the institute include the role of African-Americans in the American West, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Civil Rights movement. This interdisciplinary program is geared toward language arts, social studies, visual arts, and other core content educators.
Each day participating educators will learn new insights from scholars of American art and history, complete inquiry-based activities in the galleries to connect artworks to each day’s theme, and utilize new content knowledge to revise an existing lesson plan to include African-American history and culture. During the institute’s final day, educators will share their lessons with each other. All participants will receive classroom resources, including books, posters, postcards, and a CD with digital images of related artworks, image guide, mediagraphy of related Web sites and resources, and lesson plans tied to state and national teaching standards.
