Charles M. Russell (1864–1926)
Stay with Him!, 1907
Transparent watercolor and ink on paper
Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas
1961.291
For a number of years Russell had an arrangement to provide works to the W. T. Ridgley Company of Great Falls, which was billed as “manufacturers of the C. M. Russell calendars” as well as “souvenir post cards of western scenes.” This watercolor was made into a humorous postcard, with the addition of an inscription in someone else’s hand. These postcards were widely distributed and, during Russell’s lifetime, were popular with a broad audience.
