Fort Worth, TX, October 4, 2004 — The Amon Carter Museum Board of Trustees announced today that it has accepted the decision of Dr. Rick Stewart to step down as director of the museum to become chief curator. Dr. Stewart’s decision was driven by his desire to resume scholarly work with the museum’s wonderful collections and to return to his lifelong devotion to research and writing. He will continue as director until his successor is identified. The board of trustees is forming a search committee immediately.

Board President Ruth Carter Stevenson stated, “Two of the museum’s great strengths have been its scholarly publications and exhibitions of its permanent collections. Dr. Stewart’s wish to move to chief curator will bring added strength and depth to the museum’s professional staff in support of the museum’s important interpretative responsibilities.”

Dr. Stewart commented, “I believe that continuing as chief curator of the museum’s collections will facilitate the transition into new leadership, allowing for an orderly succession plan. I have been fortunate to be with the museum during its most exciting and ambitious period of growth. I look forward to working on a number of exhibition projects in the near future. This decision is purely personal and is anchored solely in a desire to return to my scholarly pursuits.”
