Undertaken in 1853-54, John Charles Fremont's last expedition across the Rockies was the first in the history of western exploration to systematically capture the magnificence of the terrain. It was Fremont's skills, along with the help of assistant Solomon Nunes Carvalho, that enabled him to make daguerreotypes in the face of unimaginably difficult circumstances.
