Four-year-old Mae Dean and her family travel west by covered wagon to settle the Texas Panhandle. During a terrible rainstorm, Papa appears to ignore his wife and children as he struggles to drive their horses and wagon to the top of a steep cap rock so that their belongings will not be swept away by floods. This quiet story is based on a true tale of the authors' relatives. Although young listeners may need a better explanation of cap rocks, this is a good choice for primary story hours or for classes studying the westward movement.
