Grounds and Building Technician

Part-time position. Duties are divided between grounds maintenance during the growing season including mowing, trimming, edging, planting, pruning, weeding, and sprinkler maintenance and general building maintenance during winter months. Perform litter removal on grounds year-round.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Perform grounds maintenance, gardening, snow removal, and cleanup on landscaped areas and adjacent hardscapes. Routinely inspect grounds, maintain written reports of damage or outdoor maintenance needs or fixture wear, and review them to the Assistant Facilities Manager for repair or replacement.

    1. Maintain, repair, and install automatic irrigation systems.

    2. Use blueprints for planting and irrigation layouts.

    3. Install and maintain lawns, shrubs, trees, ground covers and indoor plants. Mow, trim, edge lawns, prune trees and shrubs, lay sod, etc.

    4. Apply fertilizers and other lawn maintenance products; maintain required MSDS information on chemicals and products as directed.

    5. Operate standard equipment of garden tasks common to the landscape trade including cultivators, edgers, power mowers, sweepers, etc.; maintain equipment in working order and storage shed in neat orderly condition.

    6. Practice and understand the elements of good customer service, good communication skills, and interaction with others. Interact well with co-workers, immediate supervisor, building clients, and general museum staff.

    7. Responsible and accountable for performing tasks in accordance with museum and OSHA safety regulations.

    8. Assist with general repair and maintenance of the building, including painting, patching, moving furniture, etc. Properly operate power tools.

Qualifications

• High school diploma; some college or trade school training preferred.
• OSHA regulation training related to the position.
• 3 years’ experience in landscaping, horticultural, or related field.
• Experience in horticultural chemical application. Knowledge of organic gardening techniques preferred.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture; installation and maintenance of lawn sprinkler systems; appropriate use of lawn and landscape equipment; and practice routine maintenance and safe operation of trucks, tractors, mowers and other light to heavy duty equipment.
• Ability to prepare plans, specifications, and estimates for less complex landscaping projects. Ability to read basic blueprints.
• Communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Move and/or maneuver materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Work from a ladder when necessary; use safety belt when appropriate.
• Flexibility, good character, and good judgment essential. Must be able to work outdoors year round and be able to work alone as well as with others.
• Must follow all museum safety regulations and wear safety equipment provided at all times.
• Must pass required physical, drug and background screens; valid driver’s license required.

Supervision is received from the Assistant Facilities Manager. Shoes and uniform provided. Hourly rate competitive; drug and background screen required.
