The Art of the American Snapshot, 1888-1978: From the Collection of Robert E. Jackson

With the advent of George Eastman’s Kodak camera and roll film in 1888, photography became an everyday aspect of modern life. Trace the history of the snapshot in America, from the late nineteenth century up to the 1970s, in this special exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art.

I am sorry I will miss John’s talk, but I look forward to seeing the show the last week of April.

Thought the show was great fun and a bit of a surprise. I went because of my interest in old photography. I’m always getting old slides from the 50’s or so to develope for people who never had prints or lost them.

Excuse me, the gallery talk title might be a typo -

Snapshot ARE art, in its purist most unadulterated form. Images, unburdened by narrative and artistic perspective.

Images as images. Distilled water. You get it or you dont.

I love it.

I can wait to vist this exhibit. “artist/photographers are just so 80’s…

For a better idea on images without art see Mandel/Sultan’s seminal book “Evidence”.

Applying aesthetics to snapshots - interesting concept. Will the gallery talk be accessible afterwards?

I’m impressed! Through some search or another, I wound up at your site… and read the first sentence, and then the second, and the third… and on and on, and you just write and write and write and write… but I can’t figure out if you’ve actually said anything! Amazing!!!! Do you charge for this service??? What takes but just a few phrases or sentences seems to require paragraphs of effort on your part…. I love it!!!! Please keep writing.

I don’t know about the snapshots thing. One of my least favorite times is being socially forced to view other peoples vacation pictures. Yawn.

I wonder if all the pictures in my picture box are art? Haha… maybe I will try to get a gallery to display them. Yeah!

I love the idea of snapshot art. I’m sad I missed this one. I bet it was great. Is there a way we can see some of the photos online? Maybe a slideshow or something?

The photos were wonderful. Excellent, beautiful, haunting and hilarious.

Yes I agree, photos were beautiful but I will be glad if we could have some slideshow.

Bummer! i completely missed out on this exhibit. A slideshow would be great!

It is a beautiful collection of snapshots, i like them.

Are you in New Jersey? you should have your address & location on every page. not sure where you are located. but id love to see the shows.
