Masterworks of American Portraiture
More than fifty works from the museum’s permanent collection examine the strong tradition of American portraiture.
A crucial genre in the history of photography, portraiture is the practice that was most quickly adopted and most ardently enjoyed by the middle class. This exhibition includes works by the portrait studio firm Southworth and Hawes, as well as those by such figures as Elliot Erwitt, Walker Evans, Nicholas Nixon, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, and Weegee.
