Masterworks of American Photography: Artistic Communities

February 11, 2011July 31, 2011

The Amon Carter houses the photographic archives of six artists, representing a cross-section of important twentieth-century movements.

The current Masterworks of American Photography exhibition celebrates the museum’s 50th Anniversary year by highlighting the extensive holdings of Carlotta Corpron, Nell Dorr, Laura Gilpin, Eliot Porter, Erwin E. Smith, and Karl Struss. While the photographs gracing the walls summarize each artist’s career through key works, the display cases around the gallery are filled with albums, letters, and papers introducing the photographers’ admirers and colleagues and reminding us of the broader cultural communities integral to art-making.
