Spurs

The spurs on a cowboy’s boots were used to guide horses. They were also a status symbol and “social requirement,” which meant that the wearer rode horses. When the cowboy walked down the wooden sidewalks in town, the spurs would jingle. That sound is produced by the rowel, a disc on the back of the spur. The rowel comes in a variety of sizes. The smaller the rowel, the more discomfort to the horse. Sometimes the cowboy would get fancy and add conchos (silver discs) to decorate his spurs.
