Guns

Unlike in the movies, cowboys did not always wear pistols and holsters. There were many reasons for this, which varied from ranch to ranch, depending upon the needs and rules of the outfit. Sometimes ranches had specific rules against carrying guns. Sometimes cowhands chose not to wear guns because they were heavy. All in all, very little of the work they did required the use of a gun.
