Branding

Once all the cows and calves were cut out of the big herd, branding began. Calves would be branded with the brand of their mothers. They were roped and dragged to the fire where branding irons were heated. Once there, the mother’s brand was burned into their flank; then they were dehorned and the male calves were castrated. [This process can be seen in Hot Iron and Sharp Knife (LC S6-81).]
