Branding |

| Once all the cows and calves were cut out of
the big herd, branding began. Calves would be branded with the brand of
their mothers. They were roped and dragged to the fire where branding irons
were heated. Once there, the mother’s brand was burned into their
flank; then they were dehorned and the male calves were castrated. [This
