- After applying to visit China several times, Eliot Porter and his
sons Patrick and Jonathan were admitted into the country for seven
closely monitored weeks in 1980; Porter and Jonathan returned the
following year.
- Now interested in the ties between people and the land, he also
photographed views of city life: street vendor stands, harbor scenes,
movie theaters, and school children, as well as landscape views. Photographing
people was unusual for the artist, but Porter wanted to illustrate
the character of this populous country, which has one-fourth of the
world’s population.
- In collaboration with his son, Jonathan, a China scholar, Porter
produced the book All Under Heaven: The Chinese World (1983).
