| General Notes |
Outerbridge enrolled at the Art Students' League in New York City in 1915, where he studied drawing. He established himself as a freelance illustrator by the time he was nineteen, but left the field in 1921 to study photography at the Clarence White School. During the 1920s Outerbridge produced artistic still lifes, figures, and cityscapes as well as innovative commercial work for a number of magazines. In 1925 he moved to Paris and joined the arts scene there. His business ventures were failures, however, and in 1929 he returned to New York. During the 1930s Outerbridge developed a Carbro color printing process that was used mainly for his commercial work and opened a portrait studio in Laguna Beach, California, in 1942. In 1945 he married an interior designer and gave up photography to help with her career. He later wrote a column on color photography for U.S. Camera, but did not return to the studio. |
