Background: Insects and Mammals
Porter's scientific proclivities led him periodically to photograph reptiles, spiders, insects, and even small mammals on his photographic excursion and in his backyard studio. He would cool off lizards in the refrigerator to keep them still for such sessions, often placing them or other similar subjects in specially designed natural settings. True to his scientific upbringing, he raised spiders in his studio and challenged himself to photograph the stages of a hatching mosquito, writing short essays about the experiences for his own edification. The collection holds 92 prints of such subjects.
