Wild Spaces, Open Seasons: Hunting and Fishing in American Art

Meet at the special exhibition entrance for a guided tour of Wild Spaces, Open Seasons: Hunting and Fishing in American Art. This is the first major exhibition to explore the multifaceted meanings of such outdoor subjects in both painting and sculpture from the early nineteenth century to World War II. This exhibition encompasses a wide variety of portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and genre scenes, including iconic works by Thomas Cole, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens, as well as key pictures by specialists in the category such as Charles Deas, Alfred Jacob Miller, William T. Ranney, and Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait. No reservations required.

Homeschool Tour: Wild Spaces, Open Seasons

For students 5–18 years

During this wildly interactive experience, students will explore the exhibition Wild Spaces, Open Seasons: Hunting and Fishing in American Art to see how artists used their particular medium to celebrate recreational, commercial, personal, and sometimes vital ways humans have lived off the land. Gallery teachers will make connections between the role of the hunter, the sublime beauty and tragedies inherent in nature, and artists who captured these moments.

This tour is limited to thirty students; preregistration is required. For more information or to register, call 817.989.5013 or email education@cartermuseum.org.

Students will be divided into groups by age. Parents may drop off or stay with their students for this tour.

Sensory Saturdays

Program for families with children on the autism spectrum

This is a free program for families with children who are 5 to 12 years old and on the autism spectrum. Families will have time to explore artworks in the galleries and get creative during a hands-on, art-making experience!

While the needs of individuals with autism are the focus of this program, it is also intended to be fun for parents, siblings (of all ages), and other relatives!

This program is offered on the second Saturday of every month. Reservations are required. Registration for this program opens November 1.

Themed Tour

For centuries American artists have depicted military people and subjects in their work. Civilian artists have portrayed military themes, while military artists have depicted both military and civilian subjects. Learn about connections between paintings and sculpture in the museum’s collection and the military throughout American history. This tour includes rarely seen items from the archives.
