Approaches in Art: American Modernism

Teacher Workshop

FEE: $10

Explore works of art by American modernist painters Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, and Georgia O’Keeffe. Learn about different artistic styles and work with Carter Community Artist Arnoldo Hurtado to create your own painting inspired by the modernist movement. Participants will receive CPE credits and digital images for classroom use.

Space is limited; pre-registration is required.

Members on the Road Dallas

Join us as we visit the Dallas Museum of Art to see the exhibition 8Ida O’Keeffe: Escaping Georgia’s Shadow*. Ida TenEyck O’Keeffe was recognized as a gifted artist during her life, but her efforts were overshadowed by those of her famous older sister. This exhibition showcases for the first time approximately fifty works by Ida O’Keeffe including paintings, watercolors, prints and drawings. Lunch follows. We then drive to Valley House Gallery and enjoy a private tour.

Toddler Studio

Toddler Program

Drop-in for open studio time! Toddlers, ages 2–3 years, and their favorite grown-up are invited to learn about Gabriel Dawe’s Plexus no. 34 with museum educators. Participate in several color and sculpture-based activities, investigate new ideas, and play with sensory materials.

Dress for comfort!

No reservations required. Come and go between 10 a.m.–noon.

Trivia Night

Adult Program

Put on your thinking cap for a casual evening of trivia inspired by the Carter’s collection. Bring a group (up to six people per team) or come alone, and enjoy snacks, drinks, and prizes during this friendly competition. Questions cover a wide range of topics—no art history degree required!

Participants in this program must be at least 18 years of age.

Itty-Bitty Art: Music

Young Toddler Program

Bring your young toddler (ages 12–24 months) to the Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with Lauren Davis, early childhood music teacher, as she leads a developmentally appropriate session that includes music-making activities inspired by the museum’s collection.

Musical activities include creative movement, dancing, instrument play, and singing. Caregivers will learn to recognize early music behaviors such as singing and moving, as well as how to utilize music during daily rituals at home.

Please bring a small blanket for your toddler, and be sure to wear comfortable clothing.

Reservations required. Registration for this program opens February 1.

Itty-Bitty Art: Early Literacy

Infant Program

Bring your baby (up to 11 months) to the Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with Dr. James Thomas, early literacy consultant, who will demonstrate age-appropriate activities inspired by the museum’s collection.

Infancy is the time to begin with an awareness of language and books. During this program you will learn songs, how to share books, sign language, and ways to exercise with your little one to encourage language development.

Please bring a blanket to use during this program.

Library and Archives Tour

Themed Tour

Every third Saturday, join the museum’s librarian or archivist on a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum’s research library and archives. The tour starts in the reading room and continues to book storage and then to archives and special collections. Along the way, learn about the history of the facility, its collections (over 150,000 items), and its various programs. No reservations required
