Painting the Local: Place and Friendship in Demuth’s Late Architectural Paintings

Betsy Fahlman, professor of art history, Arizona State University
Charles Demuth spent much of his life in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and his work is deeply anchored in a strong sense of place, for the place of his birth was both a source of strength and inspiration. His rich personal narrative is interwoven with his friends, including Georgia O’Keeffe, who once owned Chimney and Water Tower (1931), the Amon Carter Museum’s Precisionist masterwork. Following the talk, Fahlman will sign copies of the exhibition catalogue in the Museum Store.
