Heather Hole, assistant curator of paintings, Art of Americas at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Considered one of the great early American modernists, Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) traveled the United States in search of a distinctly American aesthetic. Hole will examine the evolution of Hartley’s depictions of the American West and explore the modernist debates about American art and national identity that they reflect.
