Multitude, Solitude: The Photographs of Dave Heath

Explore the current special exhibition

Meet at the special exhibition entrance for a guided of Dave Heath’s powerful photographs of loss and hope conjure feelings of alienation and a desire for human connection. Multitude, Solitude highlights the photographer’s black-and-white pictures of the 1950s and 1960s, an intense period of self-discovery and innovation for the artist. During these pivotal years, Heath developed groundbreaking approaches to narrative and image sequence, producing exquisite individual prints; handmade book maquettes; his poetic masterwork, A Dialogue with Solitude; and multimedia slide presentations. His sensitive explorations of loss, pain, love and hope reveal Heath to be one of the most original photographers of those decades.

Homeschool Tour: Looking Out for Change

For students 5-18 years

FREE

Homeschool families are invited to participate in our inaugural program for the 2018–2019 school year. Join us as we get ready for an exciting time of change and growth. Learn about upcoming renovations, celebrate the museum’s unique collection through the lens of change, and participate in art-making activities. Students will be divided into groups by age. Parents may drop off or stay with their students for this tour

The Amon Carter will only accept registrations from primary caregivers. Registration for this program opens August 15.

Photobook Workshop Part I

Member program

In conjunction with the exhibition Multitude, Solitude: The Photographs of Dave Heath, museum members are invited to attend a unique workshop that will introduce participants to the tradition of the photobook and give them an opportunity to make their own book. The program is divided into two sessions on two consecutive Saturdays and will feature presentations by Sam Duncan, Head of Library and Archives at the Amon Carter; Ting Huang, Associate Professor of Photography at Tarrant County College; and New York- and L.A.-based photobook artist Jordan Sullivan.

• Learn the history of the photobook by looking at classic examples from the Amon Carter's library.
• Discuss the photobook’s enduring power as a vehicle for presenting images and its recent explosive popularity.
• Look at the importance of content, format, sequencing, layout, and material choices.

Space is limited to 15 participants.
Fee: $150 for both sessions

Sensory Saturdays

Program for families with children on the autism spectrum

This is a free program for families with children who are 5 to 12 years old and on the autism spectrum. Families will have time to explore artworks in the galleries and get creative during a hands-on, art-making experience!

While the needs of individuals with autism are the focus of this program, it is also intended to be fun for parents, siblings (of all ages), and other relatives!

This program is offered on the second Saturday of every month. Reservations are required. Registration for this program opens September 1.

Sharing the Past Through Art

Program for people with all stages of Alzheimer’s

Designed for adults with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, participants discuss artists, exhibitions, and themes and use artworks to connect to past experiences.

This program is offered on the second Thursday of every month.

There is a designated barrier-free entrance near accessible parking for vehicles displaying the appropriate disability permits on Lancaster Avenue (the museum’s south side).

Itty-Bitty Art: Early Literacy

Program for families with toddlers 12–24 months

Bring your young toddler (12–24 months) to the Amon Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with Dr. James Thomas, early literacy consultant, who will demonstrate age-appropriate activities inspired by the museum’s collection.

This age is the time to begin with an awareness of language and books. During this program you will learn songs, how to share books, sign language, and ways to exercise with your little one to encourage language development.

Please bring a blanket to use during this program.

Reservations are required. Registration for this program opens September 1.

Itty-Bitty Art: Music

Program for families with toddlers 12–24 months

Bring your young toddler (ages 12–24 months) to the Amon Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with Lauren Davis, early childhood music teacher, as she leads a developmentally appropriate session that includes music-making activities inspired by the museum’s collection.

Musical activities include creative movement, dancing, instrument play, and singing. Caregivers will learn to recognize early music behaviors such as singing and moving, as well as how to utilize music during daily rituals at home.

Please bring a small blanket for your toddler, and be sure to wear comfortable clothing.

Reservations are required. Registration for this program opens September 1.
