Americans Outdoors

Lecture Series

Dr. Mark Thistlethwaite, Kay and Velma Kimbell Chair of Art History, Texas Christian University

Explore artworks from the exhibitions Wild Spaces, Open Seasons: Hunting and Fishing in American Art and Caught on Paper and consider the various ways and reasons why artists have depicted Americans in their urban, rural, and wilderness environments.

This free lecture series is offered every Wednesday at 3 p.m. from August 23 to November 29 except during the week of Thanksgiving.

Sensory Saturdays

Family Access Program

This is a free program for families with children who are 5 to 12 years old and on the autism spectrum. Families will have time to explore artworks in the galleries and get creative during a hands-on, art-making experience!

While the needs of individuals with autism are the focus of this program, it is also intended to be fun for parents, siblings (of all ages), and other relatives!

Close Encounters

Access Program

Designed for people of all ages with low or no vision and their guests, participants utilize tactile tools and conversation to connect with artworks in the museum’s collection.

Reservations are required. Registration for this program opens November 1. Call 817.989.5013 or email education@cartermuseum.org to reserve your place and receive helpful instructions and parking information.

There is a designated barrier-free entrance near accessible parking for vehicles displaying the appropriate disability permits on Lancaster Avenue (the museum’s south side).

Sharing the Past Through Art

Access Program

Designed for adults with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, participants discuss artists, exhibitions, and themes and use artworks to connect to past experiences.

This program is offered on the second Thursday of every month.

There is a designated barrier-free entrance near accessible parking for vehicles displaying the appropriate disability permits on Lancaster Avenue (the museum’s south side).

A Walk in the Woods

Book Club

Prior to the program, read Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods (1997). During the program, readers and museum educators gather in the galleries and discuss the book’s connection with the special exhibitions Wild Spaces, Open Seasons: Hunting and Fishing in American Art and Caught on Paper.

Refreshments will be provided after the discussion.

Itty-Bitty Art: Play

Toddler Program

Bring your baby (ages 12–24 months) to the Amon Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with Audrey Rowland, early childhood specialist, as she leads an age-appropriate play session inspired by the Amon Carter’s collection.

In this session, examine what types of play infants enjoy, what types of materials extend play and curiosity, and the impact of play on brain development. You will also explore materials that are more valuable to play than the typical toys.

Itty-Bitty Art: Yoga

Infant Program

Bring your baby (up to 11 months) to the Amon Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with yoga instructor Miranda Davis as she leads an age-appropriate yoga session inspired by the Amon Carter’s collection.

Using artwork as inspiration, you will create a unique, playful, intimate, and joyful yoga practice. Enjoy deep breathing, simple yoga movements and postures, and plenty of time to relax and bond with your baby.

Please wear comfortable clothing and a baby carrier (front carrying) if you have it. Yoga mats and blocks will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Infant Program

Bring your baby (up to 11 months) to the Amon Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with Dr. James Thomas, early literacy consultant, who will demonstrate age-appropriate activities inspired by the museum’s collection.

Infancy is the time to begin with an awareness of language and books. During this program you will learn songs, how to share books, sign language, and ways to exercise with your little one to encourage language development.
Please bring a blanket to use during this program.
