Inspiration, Memory, and the Divine in Art

Topical Tour

Art can touch us at conscious and unconscious levels. Meet at the Information Desk and explore the galleries to consider how art can inspire us, evoke memories, and help us contemplate the divine. The tour will reference the work of neuropsychiatrist and Nobel Prize winner Eric Kandel who researched the physiological basis of memory storage, including the power of art in this process. Avedon in Texas and Homer and Remington in Black and White

Special Exhibition Tour

View selections from Richard Avedon’s renowned In the American West, which was first exhibited at the Amon Carter in 1985 and has since become a touchstone in photographic history. The original exhibition created a portrait of the American West through its people, and this small special exhibition focuses on the photographs taken in Texas between 1975 and 1985.

Then view works on paper by Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington who were among the most accomplished artists of their day. While they both personally measured the success of their careers by the recognition they received for their oil paintings, they likely would never have obtained the status of American greats without their mutual involvement in the world of illustration.
