Patricia MacLachlan inspires young authors
We were honored to have noted children’s author Patricia MacLachlan in the museum for a distance-learning broadcast today. Ms. MacLachlan is a favorite of librarians everywhere and of this librarian in particular. The Sarah Plain and Tall author talked to 80 schools (that’s over 4,000 students!) via the internet and had a local audience of elementary students from Palo Pinto, Texas, in the galleries. Her discussion included her thoughts on the creative process, what inspires her to write, and how a young author can start his/her own literary career.
Now we would like to hear from some of those students about their thoughts and feelings about Ms. MacLachlan’s books or what she talked about, the art they saw, or about art in general. Maybe you have some ideas for a story of your own to share? Go ahead and say “Howdy” in our comments section below.

I loved the conference. I loved when you showed us the picture of your daughter on picture day with her pigtails. I also loved in when your read to us. Oh and I want you to know that I am an author too.

I had a great time with you. I thought I was going to die when I saw you. You looked like my grandma and she’s 79. You are pretty nice but my grandma is meaner than a bear wanting to fight. I liked when you were talking about the paintings.

I am the 4th grade teacher at Kit Carson School in Hanford, California. What a treat to listen to wonderful stories told by such a delightful lady. It was such a thrill to see the smiles on my students faces as they had the opportunity to connect to real author half way across this country. When we won the drawing for an autographed copy of Sarah, Plain and Tall the class erupted in applause. Thank you for enriching the lives of our children.

Mrs. MacLachlan was a real joy. I love her book Baby so much that I have never forgotten it. I am so glad that she is just as sweet and funny as the author of Sarah, Plain and Tall should be.
