Impressions of the Dust Storm

  • Look carefully at the image Dust Storm. Describe in detail what you see in the image.

  • Have students give one-word descriptions for the scene.

  • What is your emotional response to the image? Why? Do you think that the photographer wanted you to feel that emotion or was he just recording something he saw? What effect do you think this photograph had on people who saw it in the 1930s?

  • Do you see photographs of unfortunate people in the media today? How do they make you feel? What do you do when you see them?

Climate and Land Use

  • Research the climatic conditions that caused prolonged drought during the 1930s and the effect those conditions had on farms during the Dust Bowl years. What were the other contributing factors to the Dust Bowl besides weather?

  • Research how FSA photographs were used by the federal government. Where did people see them? What happened to the photographs? Where are they now?

Your Reaction

  • Write a paper describing your reaction to a photograph that you see in the media today. Compare your feelings about that photograph with your reaction to the Rothstein photograph.
