Looking and Discussing
Grade: 4–5; 6–8
Subject: Visual Art, Language Arts, Social Studies

See Student Activity: Compare and Contrast

Compare and contrast Remington’s The Cheyenne, Russell’s The Medicine Man, and Catlin’s No. 13, Buffalo Hunt, Under the White Wolf Skin.

Consider how each artist portrays Native Americans. Follow the suggestions below to think harder and look longer:

  • Compare the media.

  • Compare differences in details.

  • Does the work of art tell a story?

  • Is the work of art historically correct?

  • Consider what is realistic and what is exaggerated.

  • What is unique and special?

  • Share your results with the class.

Using the same Venn diagram, compare and contrast Remington’s The Cheyenne with Charles M. Russell’s Wolf.

Reading and Research
Grade: 6–8; 9–12
Subject: Language Arts, Social Studies

Reading about the Cheyenne

  • Research the culture of the Cheyenne Indians during this period in history. Try to find accounts by Cheyenne, as well as others who lived around them or visited them.

  • Now, have students look at Remington’s portrayal of The Cheyenne and compare it to the descriptions you found in your research.

Drawing
Grade: 6–8; 9–12
Subject: Art

Blind Contour Drawing

  • Using a printed copy of The Cheyenne, students will study the image thoroughly and do a blind contour drawing of the work of art or outline the external boundary of the sculpture. They should carefully focus on the outline of the image while drawing, incorporating details as possible. This activity is helpful for students who are unable to view the actual work of art but have access to the slide and printed copy.
